FAQ for kernel 3.10 - 06/09/2006
--------------------------------

Q: Can I use this kernel if I'm booting Amithlon from the original CD?
A: No, you must have Amithlon installed on a hard disk.

Q: How do a I check the new kernel is really working?
A: Install Xcat from your Amithlon CD and type 'xcat /proc/version' in a
   shell.

Q: I've installed the kernel, but my GeForce/Radeon card is still really slow.
A: You need to have the newest PowerFB Picasso96 driver installed before
hardware acceleration will work. It's available here :
   http://www.amithlon.net/updates/amithlon_contrib3b.lha

Q: PowerFB is installed, but it's still slow.
A: The kernel may not recognise your particular card. You can check this by
installing the XCat utility from your Amithlon CD then opening a shell
and typing 'xcat /proc/fb'. This should return the name of your graphics
card. If it says 'VESA VGA' or similar then your card is not recognised.

Q: What do I do about that?
A: Install the PCIList util that's incuded with this archive and e-mail the
output from it, along with the name of your graphics card, to me at:
bombcrater@garycvl.f2s.com and I'll try and support it in the next kernel.

Q: I've upgraded from the old 2.04 kernel and now my hard drive isn't working
   in DMA mode anymore.
A: DMA support has changed a bit in this kernel and DMA is no longer enabled
by default on chipsets that don't have a native IDE driver. Use the SetDMA
utility (included with this archive) to turn it on.

Q: When booting with a TFT screen attached to the DVI port of my GeForce card
I just get a blank screen.
A: The GeForce driver won't use the DVI port unless you tell it to. Add the
string 'video=riva:640x480,flatpanel=1' to the end of the kernel arguments
in you bootloader to force DVI support.

Q: When booting with a TFT screen attached to the DVI port of my Radeon card
I just get a blank screen.
A: Radeon DVI support is a bit buggy right now and simply doesn't function on
some cards. Generally the driver should auto-detect a monitor connected to
the DVI port, but you can try forcing it by using the kernel arguments
   'video=radeon:640x480,dfp'.

Q: When I use a resolution smaller than my TFT's native resolution the screen
appears as a box surrounded by black borders.
A: At present there is no scaling support on DVI output so lower resolutions
may have large black borders if your monitor is unable to scale the display.
If you can't live with this, connect your TFT to the graphics card's analogue
   output.

Q: How can I say thanks for your work and support kernel development?
A: Improving the kernel isn't cheap. As well as lots of time and effort
I need access to hardware in order to support it. Invariably that
sometimes means going out and buying stuff. You can help with this by
visiting my web site (http://www.garycvl.f2s.com) and making a donation
   via PayPal.

I offer my thanks to those who have donated in the past. Without them
this new kernel release would not have been possible.
